Peer Review

I gave Aamir's profile a 5/6  this was because he completed most of the tasks very well however in some cases he wrote too little or even didn't write anything at all, this was the only thing he needed to work on. he needs to add more detail and include more pros and cons in describing a portfolio.

Investigating different Software Options

The first option I took a look at was the HTML one. I think that this is not a good option because, it is far from user friendly. It consists of too many digits and I found this very complicated. However, if you are used to working with lots of digits, numbers, symbols etc than it may be a good option as it gives you a simple webpage as a result.

The second Software Option was 'FrontPage'. This option, in my opinion, is better than HTML. This is because it uses the familiar Microsoft menus and toolbar therefore making it easy to learn and more user-friendly. also, it comes equipped with many pre-designed web page templates. On the other hand, FrontPage is not the best Software available because, some features are specific to the Microsoft platform only, it doesn't produce the code as cleanly as Dreamweaver and it lacks interactive development tools found in other platforms such as WordPress or Dreamweaver.

The last option I looked at was 'Dreamweaver'. This option is very good because the program is designed to work with entire folders and directories of web pages, images, scripts, and media, not just simply creating a 'boring' webpage. Also, Dreamweaver has its own tools to upload and publish your files, no external FTP program is necessary. Some disadvantages include, Dreamweaver isn't for people who just want to create a small webpage or a website with only a few pages, also, it is not the simplest software around.

I think the best option was Dreamweaver, this is because it was the simplest and it seemed as though it was the easiest to use.I think the worst was HTML as i found it very confusing and would not be able to create a webpage using that software.

Describing Digital Portfolios

1.       What is a blog? Wiki? What is the difference between them?

A blog is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web. It consists of posts typically displayed in reverse chronological order. A wiki is a website that allows users to add, modify or delete its content. The difference is that in a blog you can have conversations which include many people and a wiki is more independent and usually gives information.

2.       What are the three important features of a digital portfolio?

  • ·         They are goal-driven and show the life and work of the owner.
  • ·         They allow parents to see the work of the student without interpretation of the grades.
  • ·         If they are maintained properly they can compare the work of the student over time.

3.       List one advantage and one disadvantage of a digital portfolio?

One advantage of a digital portfolio:
It can be seen anywhere across the globe
One disadvantage of a digital portfolio:
The information on the portfolio can be easily copied and pasted or saved on another person’s computer.

4.       3 examples of digital portfolios:

  • http://cte.jhu.edu/ep/presentation/init.cfm?key=177B1D1A-D9AA-47C7-A1F7898A06E5E2C3       I think this is a very good portfolio. It is very professional and well-organized. I like the way she used yellow at the top to add color and creativity. She uses subtitles to organize and make her paragraphs clear and understandable. She talks about all aspects of her work and also includes some personal information. I think this portfolio could be improved with a few exciting pictures.
  • http://artfulmemoirs.weebly.com/                                                                                                                        I really like this portfolio for many reasons, its creative, looks good and the student also includes lots of appropriate information. I like the way she has her 'contents' to the side of the portfolio, this could show that she is organized and neat, everything is in order. In this portfolio she talks about one main subject however uses sub-headings to organize her work. I think she could have improved by using a more exciting font to write with or adding a few more pictures throughout the digital portfolio.
  • http://murcha.wordpress.com/about/                                                                                                               I like the way this woman includes many pictures of herself and her students in order to show what exactly she does for work. I think it was a very good idea to split her portfolio into different pages which helps keep the viewer interested and not confused. I think a more exciting font could have been more appealing and would make her digital portfolio more interesting.

Communication and the Internet 2

Communication is so important during an emergency, because without communication those in the emergency would not be able to call for help or tell loved ones all was okay. Even after the emergency communication is necessary when trying to raise money by asking for donations in order to help rebuild what was lost, also it is important as communication allows people to get the news across the world and to warn close by countries.
in recent disasters many forms of communication were used, these include, Emails, Phone calls, News on the web, Parcels/Letters were sent and cargo ships were used to drop letters/parcels etc.
The essential information that needs to be communicated during a disaster usually includes how many people were injured, where and when it happened/started etc.

Communication and the Internet

Communication and the Internet

Synchronous communication is direct communication where the communicators are time synchronized. This means that all people involved in the chat are present at the same time. This includes a telephone conversation (not texting), a company board meeting, a chat room event and instant messaging.

Asynchronous communication does not require that all parties involved in the communication to be present at the same time. Some examples are e-mail messages, discussion boards, blogging, and text messaging over cell phones. In distance (specifically online) education asynchronous communication is the main (sometimes the only) method of communication. Usually, we use different discussion boards in each class with each having its own purpose.

Urgent information is usually sent by synchronous communication, this is done to ensure that the other part of the conversation recieves the info there and than.

Information that can wait a while is usually sent by asynchronous communication, this information is usually not very important or is relevant for a later date etc.

For synchronous communication you usually need a phone or a computer or even a meeting room. Now that i have mentioned the hardware, this is the software usually needed, chat softwares, such as skype which allow you to see one another are the most common used, also softwares such as Msn or Vibe are used.

For unsynchronized communication, a laptop/phone/any technological device, you would also need a texting/bbming software to deliver the information.
